Union: Isar | Dürrach | Walchen

History | How did the memory come about? Why?

++In short: move of a whole village & flooding of the valley in 1959++

1924 - Hydroelectric power station Walchensee

The hydroelectric power station at Walchensee (Bavaria) is put into operation.

The result: The water on the upper Isar (also from the river Rißbach) is partly transferred to the Walchensee - The Isar loses a lot of power.

1927 - Hydroelectric power station Jenbach

The hydroelectric power station in Jenbach (Tyrol) is put into operation.

The result: The water of the lake Achensee didn´t flows into the Isar, but is discharged into the Inn.

After-effects of dehydration

The withdrawal of the water was very noticeable in the coming years. The Isar was partially a small trickle - the biodiversity was in great danger. Bad Tölz was also severely affected by the lack of water. Therefore, it was decided

  • to build the dam and
  • to relocate a complete village

1954 - Start of the demolition of Fall

The violent protest of the inhabitants didn´t help. It was resettled against the will of the inhabitants.

1959 - Flooding of the valley

and the demolition of the last remaining house.

Key Data

  • 124 million cubic meters of water
  • 44m high dam
  • Power: 6.4 MW
  • Length 7km
  • Width 2km
  • Tributaries - Isar | Dürrach | walchen
  • Outflows - Isar

Positive side effect: protection against flooding!

In the past years the Sylvensteinspeicher helped us as a flood protection and proved itself particularly in the years 1999 and 2005.

Nature reserve

Since 1983 are in the municipalities Lengries | Wallgau | Jachenau | Krün a protected area stretching over 19100 hectares.

The purpose of this nature reserve is the preservation of biodiversity typical for alpine nature. Wild camping, or make even unapproved fire, is not allowed and should be avoided if possible. But you can marvel at this magnificent biotope around the year and enjoy :)
